Departure: Top Art Student Show 2010

As the annual Top Art Award enters its third year, the citizens of Rotorua are again being treated to a sneak preview of the talents of this area's next generation of artists.

The award seeks to identify the top art student from each of the city's high schools who are then invited to work towards a public exhibition of their work, held at the Rotorua Arts Village. Sponsored by the Civic Arts Trust and run by the Rotorua Arts Village, the award involves a presentation of a certificate and a cheque earlier in the year, but the climax is the two-week exhibition held in August- the first time for most of the winners that they have ever taken part in a public show.

The Top Art Student Show opened at the Art Village on Tuesday 27 July, and will run for two weeks. At the opening the guests were treated to an impressive exhibition of talent:

Zoe Stephenson (Western Heights High School) displays meticulous draftsmanship and an unusual blue/pink palette in a series of paintings that combine a beautiful woman with a variety of animals -zebras, octopi, a fantail, and a mysterious jean-clad stag-headed human figure.

Matthew Fitzgerald's (Reporoa College) stark, 3D canvases use items including wood, nails, CDs and a repeating image of a jet plane to ask questions about life and his search for perfection.

Robert Pak (Rotorua Boys High School) depicts a mysterious world where people have clothes, and even read newspapers, but have no bodies. He is intrigued by human perception, and the way in which everyone creates their own world, based on past and present experience.

Rhianna Crawford's (Rotorua Lakes High School) vibrant paintings were inspired by a desire to express emotions in paint and texture. She has purposely left them intitled, inviting her viewers to assign their own emotions to the works.

The exhibition, always an exciting display of upcoming talent, is open to the public every weekday from 10am-4pm.
