Te Papa Museum of New Zealand: Paperskin: the art of tapa cloth is a unique celebration of the breathtaking visual sophistication and richness of tapa– also known as barkcloth which has played a central role in island cultures in the Pacific for over 3000 years.

Paperskin: the art of tapa cloth explores the stories embodied in an impressive selection of more than 40 works made of tapa from countries across the Pacific. With their evocative visual language of bold and intricate patterning, tapa have been likened to tattoos –  another kind of skin that envelops the wearer in cultural significance and beauty. The exhibition is organised by Queensland Art Gallery, Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, and the Queensland Museum. 19 June-12 September at the Visa Platinum Gallery, Level 4. Free entry.

Christchurch Art Gallery: Andrew Drummond: Observation. Action. Reflection. The first comprehensive survey exhibition of this acclaimed New Zealand sculptor. Focusing on the period between 1980 and 2010, this spectacular exhibition will explore Andrew Drummond's rich and diverse practice, which spans performance, sculpture, installation, drawing, photography and technology.

Drummond is renowned for producing engaging and dynamic large-scale mixed-media works that explore themes relating to the land and the human body, machines and movement. The exhibition features a major new kinetic sculpture installed in the foyer, and is accompanied by a stunning catalogue. 14 May-05 September.

Queensland Art Gallery: Ron Mueck. This exhibition surveys a group of major works by Australian-born, London-based sculptor Ron Mueck. Mueck’s sculptures are some of the most widely acclaimed and identifiable works in the international contemporary art arena. Often naked and suspended in states of self-consciousness, introspection or deep contemplation, his figures present both emotional and physical states of exposure. Astounding in their realism, Mueck’s works have earned him a singular place as the creator of some of the most evocative sculptures of our time. Featuring celebrated works from Australian and international collections, in addition to new sculptures, it will be one of the most comprehensive exhibitions of Mueck’s work ever presented. 8 May - 1 August 2010. Gallery 3.3 & 3.4, GoMA. Admission fee applies.
