Jane Matua
|
The work of ceramic artist Jane Matua is characterised by her use of wild clay and the processes she uses to transform this humble material into contemplative works of art. In Matua's work the clay, collected from her tribal whenua, addresses a variety of contemporary issues and transcends traditional boundaries of functional ware. The historical traces from the environment and her whakapapa are important aspects of her work. She says that whakapapa, strong family ties, wahine toa (female strength) and beliefs in Maori spirituality affirm her identity and are reflected in sculptural forms. |
