the volcanic heartland: our story through public art

The Volcanic Heartland: Our Story Through Public Art is part history, part tour guide, taking you on a journey from Rotorua to Taupo.

Over a year in the making, the booklet paints the story behind our public art and some of the artists who created them.

Public art is often inspired by people and events in history and so our art is part of the story of Rotorua and of the people who have helped shape and build the district and New Zealand. From the early Maori explorers Tamatekapua and Ihenga, to our nations most famous love story, Hinemoa and Tutanekai, to European settlers like Camille Malfroy and adventurers like Jean Batten. Their deeds, contributions and exploits captured by artists in wood, metals or paint.

The guide is available to purchase for $5 at McLeods Booksellers, the City Focus, Museum, Information Centre and RAVE. Contact Kiri.Jarden@rdc.govt.nz if you would like to order on-line.
